A few helpful things to know before embarking on this cultural journey.
What is a Hầu Đồng ritual?
Hầu Đồng, also known as spirit mediumship, is one of the important ritual practices associated with Vietnam’s Mother Goddess belief system.
The tradition is part of the broader Practices related to the Viet beliefs in the Mother Goddesses of Three Realms, which UNESCO inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016. The belief system is associated with spiritual wishes for health, happiness, prosperity and well-being, while also connecting communities through ritual, music and shared cultural experiences. UNESCO
During a Hầu Đồng ceremony, the medium may change elaborate costumes, perform ritual gestures, make offerings and embody different figures within the pantheon associated with the Mother Goddess tradition. Chầu Văn, a traditional form of ceremonial singing and music, accompanies important parts of the ritual.
For visitors, the significance of Hầu Đồng lies not only in what can be seen during the ceremony, but also in the stories, beliefs, music, costumes, craftsmanship and community traditions surrounding it.
This experience offers an opportunity to observe and learn — not simply watch a performance.
